Thailand has so much to offer. City lovers will revel in exotic Bangkok, the most interesting - and entertaining - capital in Southeast Asia. The city is dotted with awe-inspiring Buddhist temples, marked by quaint ethnic quarters, and home to world-class museums, shopping, dining, and night life. Last, but not least, Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia.

Outside of Bangkok, things quiet down considerably: Thailand is a rural nation. The North is known for its myriad hill-tribes, small ethnic minorities marked by distinct languages, cultures, customs and colorful costumes; as well as its beautiful scenery. It is a hilly and mountainous region; the further north you go into the notorious "Golden Triangle," the more breath-taking the vistas and scenery become. Central Thailand is considered the "classic heart" of Thailand. It is made up of broad, well-drained valleys and is the rice bowl of Asia. It also boasts some of the most spectacular temple ruins in Asia, in the old Siamese capitals of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya. Southern Thailand is distinct from the North, culturally, geologically and linguistically. Here the explorers' primary focus is on the landscape - soaring limestone mountains, a thousand feet high, rising out of the seas; hundreds of spectacular islands to delight beach lovers; and huge national parks preserving Thailand's remaining rain forests.

For many travelers, the fondest memories from Thailand are of the Thais themselves. Thais are a gracious, hospitable, fun-loving people, and travelers usually leave the country having made new friends.
