Indochina!

Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam

Open to travelers for less than a decade, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam represent the new frontier of travel in Southeast Asia.

Following decades of war, Vietnam has thrown open its doors and rolled out the welcome mat to travelers. One of the most fascinating destinations in Southeast China, Vietnam has much to offer explorers: breathtaking mountains in the North, populated by dozens of colorful "hill tribes"; awe-inspiring Halong Bay, with its thousands of limestone mountains soaring straight out of the sea; laid-back Hue, home of the country's finest ancient monuments; charming Hoi An, a polyglot trading port frozen in time; frenetic Saigon, with its colonial architecture and eating and nightlife to challenge Bangkok as Southeast Asia's entertainment capital; and the delta of the mighty Mekong River.

Cambodia has been open to tourism for an even shorter time. It may be a tiny country, but it is home to one of the true wonders of the world: Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat and the hundreds of ruins which surround it are the vestiges of an ancient Khmer empire that stretched across most of present-day Southeast Asia, with Angkor as its capital. The numerous sites are awe-inspiring and spellbinding, from Angkor itself - a carefully-restored, kilometer square shrine with miles or intricate bas relief carvings recounting the battles and conquests of the great Khmer emperors; to Ta Phrom, a serene and peaceful ruined monastery being slowly subsumed by the encroaching jungle; to Angkor Thom and The Bayon, a mysterious temple featuring dozens of giant, carved, expressionless stone busts of the enigmatic emperor who the edifice was dedicated to.

Laos is a peaceful, tranquil and stunningly beautiful country. Whether sipping a cocktail while enjoying the blood-red sunset over the Mekong River in Vientiane; visiting the mysterious Pak Ou Caves, filled with thousands and thousands of Buddha images of all sizes deposited by pilgrims over the years; or temple-hopping in the former royal capital of laid-back Luang Prabang, perhaps the region's most delightful city, Laos is a breath of fresh air for intrepid travelers. The friendly Lao people and wonderful cuisine are additional highlights to a visit.
